I got an old style PS3

I went to the store to pick up a PS3, and was told that they are NOT backwards compatible. So, it wont play my PS1 or PS2 games! So, Sony upgraded, and futzed with the damn thing till it wont play older games?? All PS stuff, has always been backwards compatible. this upset me! The original PS3 would play PS2 and PS1 games. Then they fixed it, and futzed with it, and it would only play PS2 games, then they updated it and futzed with it and made the memory bigger but it would only play "some" PS2 games. Then they updated and futzed with it, and updated its memory, and it would only play 2% of PS2 games. Then they drop the price and update the memory, and work some buttons and it will only play PS3 games, but they dropped the price! Well, dropping the price doesnt make it better!

I have been stalking Ebay for an 80 gig old style PS3. The one that sold for $699 I found one a couple of weeks ago, and bid and then bumped my bid to reflect my highest bid. It has 17 games with it, 4 controllers, and all the cables, and from an adult non smoking home. The auction ended at 3am! I wasnt gonna stay up. I woke to find someone kept bumping my bid till my bid rolled over and their bid reflected $5 past my bid. Its been 10 days and that person did not pay for the game system so the owner wrote me with a 2nd chance bid. Wanted me to pay my "highest bid" as a buy it now option. I said NOPE! I will pay what my LAST bid was BEFORE the hit and run bidder. Which was a good $50 less. I would pay a "reasonable" shipping and handling rate and call it a day. He emailed back and forth trying to get me higher crying about how he needed the money....anyway, I paid for the item this morn at MY price. I was wondering if it was HIS bidder that tried to jack up the price. Maybe a neighbor or friend just to keep the price high. Either way, I wasnt falling for it. So, lets see if my item shows up. I paid using paypal with insurance, so I am not worried about it.

So, woot! I am getting a PS3 that will play my old games including FFXI and then FFIV when it comes out! Nice! Thanks for all the advice on which system to chose.

erm Deji are you positive the 80gb plays ps2 and ps1 games???? I recall only the 60 gb one playing backwards compatible games. Mine is also an imported US PS3 i got on launch day. Just a heads up...... Wish i was online when you asked the LS, hopefully it wrks and does play backwards compatible games as you want it to

The 60GB version plays around 95%-96% of all ps2 games as it has the emotion engine physically built into it. The 80GB was software emulation at first iirc and had a much lower compatibility rate but still played PS2 games. More than the 360 could play xbox games anyway lol. Then with every other model they dropped support.

Hopefully yours is the backward compatible software emulated version

Oh and Star Ocean 3 Till the End of Time even on the 60gb version crashes. its one of those games in the 4%-5% that are not compatible...........


As for the ebay thing, yup its a standard tactic nowadays. A friend bids till he out bids then says give em second choice, though sadly there is no real way of telling who is genuine and who is a fraudster.....

I have played PS1 and PS2 and Ps3 games on it. so...yep, I am pretty sure. unless I was hallucinating. ...could be ya know.
