Introducing the Square Enix Security Token (03/10/2009)
Introducing the Square Enix Security Token.

As a result of growing account security concerns within the online gaming community, Square Enix is proud to introduce the Square Enix Security Token. The token greatly increases the security of PlayOnline accounts by allowing users to log on by using a constantly changing one-time password that is displayed on the screen. The Square Enix Security Token will be available for purchase through the PlayOnline Viewer in the near future for those who wish to take advantage of the added security this optional service provides. As a special incentive, each Square Enix Security Token will come with an exciting in-game bonus which may just prove indispensible during your many adventures in Vana'diel!
Information on the Security Token's release date and price, as well as further details regarding the in-game bonus, will be announced at a later date.

That's like saying "You and I both know there's a chance that currently you might get hacked, but pay £10 and we'll guarantee you won't!" - Should be free IMO.

isnt that a little like worrying about the horse AFTER he leaves the barn? through that gapping hole in the side wall? why not fix the hole instead of putting a GPA on the horse? If he gets out, dont worry, we can always find him on a tracker, and if all else fails, we can just wait for his password to reset in 3 days. Once someone has your pass word, its too late! dont matter if the password was just for today or if you have used the same one for years and years. dummies! bunch of dummies
I miss you all! poke chakoteh for me. over and over and over...just keep poking her, everytime you see her. Say its from Dejibo, and I made you do it.

A lot of people I know are infuriated by this. Everyone agrees, it should be free. They're trying to sugar coat the pricing with "Oooh Free in game rewards!" Yeah... it's not working.
Blizzard also has these that work for World of Warcraft... and I'm sure their users were just as angry.
I honestly feel that this might blow up in their face, since account security is such a huge issue for the players. Gonna wait and see how this works out.

To be honest im not going to get it. there is no such thing as safe and secured. if people truly wanted to they will fine a way around it and still hack in your system. Where you think you smart, there is always someone smarter. I'll take my chances like i've been doing for the last 5 years. lol besides if someone hack into my system, Well, thats just the end of FFXI I had a good run. No way im going to start back over.

It is a huge improvement in security, your password changes every minute or so, and once it has been input, changes again. It is an incredibly difficult system to exploit, especially for the existing Trojans that frightened the crap out of us all last year. Also with it being purchased I can only assume that it carries some kind of guarantee against account theft.
I believe that WOW players have the same thing, and even with the staggering number of subscribers that they have, they still charge for it. If Blizzard can't subsidise the cost enough to make it free, SE have no chance.
